The stiff materials

This is how we call the wood used for the various components of the yurt:

•  the walls (Khana)

• double door with one french leave and plaint one (Khaalga)

•  the poles (Uni)

•  the upper opening (Toono)

•  the central posts (Bagana)

Rough wood structure of a 6 walls yurt

This wood can be made of bot, pine tree or larch, regarding each wood qualities and each components elasticity and resistance constraints.

The wood undergoes a treatment " in water ". It spends several days (until 14) in the water, then it is dried, then reimmersed etc.... For this operation, we have our wood cut and pruned in the country side, 700Km from the capital and we use a spring of sulfured warm water.

After some cycles of this treatment, the resin goes out in the form of a dough looking like a sort of wallpaper glue : the wood is then dry, solid and very light, ready to be painted. It is completed.

The wood is cut by hand in the thread which explains some irregularities here or there.

The wood cut by machine has to be banned, especially to make the walls and the poles (we can see the wheels tracks on the wood, the roundness are perfect but the result is breakable).

Walls must be assembled by links made of camel leather. Cow or yak leather can also be used but the leather is too stiff once dry and it breaks.

The painting is made in our workshop. You can choose the color you want. We use German, Korean or Polish painting, in two layers. The varnish is Korean. The Chinese painting available in Mongolia is less expensive but of very inferior quality.

The soft materials
This naming contains the textile elements of the yurt. This part is decisive because it is it that insures the yurt waterproofness and heat insulation.

FELT

Under our latitudes a single felt lay is necessary, unless you live in Quebec or in Finland. But if later you wish to buy another lay, it is possible because we have stocks in our various warehouses.

Mongolian love the traditional felt. Of greyish color, it loosens a strong smell which becomes more marked with the humidity. For that reason we use a 85% wool and 15% synthetic of excellent quality white felt with very good insulating virtues.

For certain regions (Spain, Morocco, the South of Italy) it is possible to put no felt. The price of the yurt is then significantly reduced.
WATERPROOF COVER

This component is very important this is why it has to be selected with great care.

If we want a natural material, there are two types available in Mongolia:

  • the Green khaki one (Chinese or Russian) which allows the water to pass easily
  • The white one (Russian or Korean), much dearer, but more waterproof.

We chose this last one after trying funny experiments with glasses and the two types of cloth tightened over the glasses. We poured some water on the pieces of cloth.
The result was final: both let pass the water but the 1st one after 5 minutes as the 2d one after 2 hours.

In the light of our experience, we decided to get rid of the outside decorated cotton lay because it maintains an important humidity between itself and the waterproof cover. This decision sharply improved the life expectancy of the " soft materials".

If nevertheless, you wish to add an outside decorated cotton lay, they are always available in tens of motives and colors.

INSIDE COTTON LAY

This fabric is made of off-white cotton. It protects the inside of the yurt from the residues of the felt. This element fits between the wood and the felt. This material has also an ornamental advantage because it emphasizes the crosspieces of walls.

ROOF SQUARE (urkh) and YURT STOCKING (rayartch)

Cut in the same cloth as the waterproof cover, the roof square protects the inside of the yurt of the water infiltrations by the toono. It can be pulled down in case of cold and of strong rains but it usually remains half opened by nice weather.

The yurt stocking is a strip of decorated waterproof cloth which protects the bottom of the yurt from spatters due to the rain. It is easily washable.
These two components are essential. They insures that your yurt will benefit from a better protection against rain and humidity.

THE ROPES
The ropes are plaitted by nomads. They are 100% made of horse hair. They are of different diameters according to the use of each one.

All the components described here can be sold as spare parts.

THE WINDOWS
We add to our yurts 4 removable plexiglass panes. They are set on the south side of the upper opening in order to allow the light to enter without suffering from bad weather.

Quality control

All the yurts without exception are assembled before loaded in the container.
This boring operation is necessary to allow us to check that all the elements are here, that they assembled correctly together and that they correspond to our commitments.

The joining control of the yurts before loading
During this operation, we number each elements on their "invisible" parts. This will allow you to set up your yurt more easily.
